Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) To understand their ethical and cultural context;
(ii) To know how to apply the acquired knowledge in the field of ethics and deontology by demonstrating a professional approach based on ethics, to the work in the field of physiotherapy;
(iii) To know how to gather, select and interpret the relevant information, especially in their scientific area, in order to be able to give an ethical justification of decisions and of judgments in professional field;
(iv) To know how to solve ethical and deontological dilemmas in the field of physiotherapy and to know how to build and ground personal ethical and deontological arguments.
Syllabus:
1st Unit – Fundamental concepts: 1. General definitions of ethics, deontology and morals. 1.1. General definitions of “deontology”; 1.2. The “golden rule of ethics. 1.3. Communication and humanization
2nd Unit – Professional Deontology: 2.1. The four prima facie principles; 2.1.1. Beneficence; 2.1.2. Non-maleficence; 2.1.3. Justice; 2.1.4. 2.2. Process of decision-making; 2.3. Quality in Physiotherapy and Ethical Principles and Responsibilities of Physiotherapists; 2.3. Case studies and their solutions according to the Quality standards and Ethical Principles and Responsibilities of Physiotherapists of the Portuguese Association of Physiotherapists.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1st unit:Syllabus contents focus on specific theoretical issues in the area of ethics and bioethics, thus enabling the fulfillment of the course objectives, skills and human capacity to have an ethical reasoning and practice.
2nd unit:Syllabus contents focus on the theoretical practical application of knowledge in the field of deontology, thus enabling the fulfillment of the course objectives, namely: to know how to apply the acquired knowledge in the field of ethics and deontology by demonstrating a professional approach based on ethics, to the work in the field of physiotherapy, to know how to gather, select and interpret the relevant information, especially in their scientific area, in order to be able to give an ethical justification of decisions and of judgments in professional field; and to know how to solve ethical and deontological dilemmas in their professional field and to know how to build and ground personal ethical and deontological arguments.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, and reading of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be periodical and based on two written tests (the first one, theoretical - 50%; the second one, resolution of a dilemma - 50%), and a written work. Final grade: 50%+40%+10%.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
1st unit – Theoretical overview of the concept of ethics, deontology and morals as well as of the relation and difference between them. Theoretical overview of need for empathy with the suffering and the others. Theoretical overview of the four prima facie principles emphasizing their relevance for fisiotherapeuts. Theoretical exercise of consolidation of knowledge from Unit 1. 2nd Unit – Theoretical exposition of the structure and the steps of the process of ethical decision making; Presentation of the structure, general and specific principles, and various sections of the Patterns of Practice of the Portuguese Association of Physiotherapy. Theoretical exercise of consolidation of knowledge from unit 2 (resolution of a dilemma in the field of ethics in physiotherapy).
