Curricular Unit:Code:
Methods and Techniques of Physiotherapy I (Basic Principles of Physiotherapy)1184MTF1
Year:Level:Course:Credits:
1UndergraduatePhysiotherapy10 ects
Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Winter SemesterPortuguese/English130
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
It is intended that the student knows the historical bases, the process of evolution and patterns of practice that regulate the profession. The student will acquire a basic knowledge of the structure, movement and function of the human body that allows him to understand the techniques of Soft Tissue Mobilization, Joint Mobilization and Ergonomics. The student should be able to identify and execute the different techniques, know the indications and contraindications, as well as integrate the knowledge formulating, an appropriate clinical reasoning.
Syllabus:
TP: Professional issues in physiotherapy 2. Ergonomics principles 3. Soft tissue mobilization principles 4. Joint mobilization principles P: I. Ergonomics: 1. Ergonomics and postural assessment 2. Ergonomics assessment instruments 3. Gait ergonomics II Soft tissue mobilization: 1. Classic massage techniques 1.1 Superficial techniques 1.2 Deep techniques 1.3 Practical applications 2. Drainage massages 2.1 Classic drainage massage 2.2 Leduc massage 2.3 Practical applications 3. Myofascial techniques 3.1 Superficial myofascial techniques 3.2 Deep myofascial techniques III Joint mobilization: 1. Physiological and accessory joint mobilization 1.1 Shoulder 1.2 Elbow, 1.3 Wrist 1.4 Hand 1.5 Spine 1.6 Hip 1.7 Leg 1.8 Foot.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
TP: By transmitting knowledge and encouraging discussion of physiotherapy as a profession, it enables the students to acquire the ability to critically analyze this process and encourage future professional development. The basic knowledge of human movement, the structure and function of the human body allows the students to acquire the ability to analyze the malfunctioning of movement and posture. The introduction of theoretical and practical concepts of basic techniques / therapeutic strategies for Soft Tissue Mobilization, Joint Mobilization and Ergonomics enables the student to develop the ability to understand the scientific basis of them. P: The practical demonstration of the various techniques of assessment, selection and implementation of procedures related to Soft Tissue Mobilization, Joint Mobilization and Ergonomics allows the student to develop skills of technical implementation and development of different intervention strategies formulating adequate clinical reasoning.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The final score is calculated taking into account the 70% of the final practical and 30% of the final theoretical-practical components.
TP: the issues addressed will be transmitted by the expository method and / or in the form of small groups discussion, with a final overall analysis for all students. The assessment of knowledge will be made through two written evaluations.
P: The topics covered in class will be exposed demonstratively so that students apply in practice the knowledge regarding assessment, planning and implementation of appropriate techniques and methods of physiotherapy. It also seeks to create the right conditions for learning the practical skills, so that the students know the suitable techniques and methods of therapy for the treatment of patients according
to a clinical reasoning. The assessment of knowledge will be made by two practical continuous assessments (50%+50%).
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical-practical: The transmission in an expository format of the historical evolution of physiotherapy and its standards of practice allow students to acquire knowledge about the constructive and evolutionary process of the profession. Later, this knowledge will form the foundation for students to critically analyze this process, in the form of group discussion, to encourage a future active participation in the development of the profession. The transmission of expository and interactive way of bases of Soft Tissue Mobilization, Joint Mobilization and Ergonomics and their indications and contraindications, allows the students to gain a deeper knowledge based in an appropriate clinical reasoning. Practical: the demonstrative / interactive way of knowledge inherent in assessment, planning and implementation of techniques and methods of physiotherapy adequate of Soft Tissue Mobilization, Joint Mobilization and Ergonomics allows students to develop manuals and clinical reasoning skills essential to future practice in a real context.
